Fresno – Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 531 (Glazer) which would have significantly stymied the ability of Central Valley cities to recruit additional jobs and businesses to the region. Senator Borgeas led an opposition effort to halt SB 531 including publishing an Op-Ed in the Fresno Bee.
“SB 531 would have dealt a significant blow to the San Joaquin Valley’s economic engine,” said Senator Borgeas. “It is important to recognize that part of Fresno’s economic vitality is a result of the ability of local governments to recruit businesses into the region and help existing local businesses expand with land use and other financial incentives.”
“Far too many businesses have already fled the state or expanded operations elsewhere, taking their jobs and economic growth with them,” added Senator Borgeas. “States such as Texas, Nevada and Arizona continue to provide even greater economic and infrastructure incentives to lure business away from California. Ultimately, SB 531 would have aided and abetted the ability of other states to poach businesses from California.”
