Senator Borgeas Celebrates Greek Independence Day

Sacramento – In honor of Greek Independence Day, Senator Andreas Borgeas (R-Fresno) presented Senate Resolution 19 which commemorates the 198th anniversary of the rebellion and the struggle of the Greek people from the Ottoman Empire. The Resolution passed the Senate with unanimous support.

He was joined by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Greek Consul General Antonios Sgouropoulos, and His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos. Metropolitan Gerasimos, the Metropolitan Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, led the Senate in opening prayer.

“The celebration of Greek Independence Day recognizes the establishment of an independent state and the lasting values and contributions that Hellenism has brought to the world, the United States, and California - in law, education, and democracy,” said Senator Borgeas. “Today, let us recognize our love for freedom, liberty, and individual rights. Let this resolution be a gesture to recognize the significant contributions Greece has given our Golden State.”

“California is home to a flourishing Greek American community. It is fitting that here in our State capitol we pay tribute to Greek independence and the long lasting friendship between California and the Hellenic Republic,” said Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis.
