This year began with a new Governor and new constitutional officers. I congratulate Governor Gavin Newsom on his inauguration. In addition, it was an honor to attend the swearing-in of Eleni Kounalakis, our first female Lieutenant Governor. I look forward to working with both to address the challenges facing California and the 8th Senate District.
With the start of the 2019-20 legislative session, I have been meeting with my colleagues from the Central Valley on efforts to expand educational opportunities, create governmental efficiencies, and invest in our infrastructure. Prior to his swearing-in this month, the Governor had already visited Fresno and convened meetings with agricultural groups to discuss water infrastructure improvements and their impact locally and across the state.
I also had the chance to get together with folks in Tuolumne County this past month while traveling through the district. It was a great opportunity to sit down and discuss concerns facing our communities.

Governor Newsom released his 2019-20 budget proposal on January 10.
I am encouraged by the investments Governor Newsom has proposed to enhance forest management, funding for early childhood education and childcare for working Californians. I appreciate the Governor’s commitment to higher education. Not only has he proposed to waive enrollment fees for two years for first time students at community colleges, he also pledged to increase student enrollment at the CSUs and UCs and set aside money for campus infrastructure improvement projects.
Blake Zante is a Senate Fellow in my office for the 2018-19 year. He is a Fresno native and recently graduated from the Smittcamp Family Honors College at Fresno State with a degree in Political Science. While at Fresno State, Blake was elected student body president and president of his fraternity. He is passionate about making Fresno a better place and giving back to his community that has given so much to him. Blake is interested in water and education policy – two critical issues in the Central Valley. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Fresno State Alumni Association. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, traveling, constantly learning new things, and watching baseball. Welcome, Blake!
